The Indian Pharmaceutical industry has contributed enormously to global healthcare by ensuring affordable, accessible and high quality medicines around the world. The industry has grown rapidly over the last decade and has been instrumental in driving generics penetration globally. Over the past 15 years, Indian Pharmaceutical companies have done well in the generic business and biggest supplier of the low cost and quality medicine to the world.

India remains an attractive destination for generic R&D and manufacturing of pharmaceuticals owing to its strong capabilities across the value chain. It is the largest provider of generic medicines globally, occupying a 20% share in global supply by volume, and supplies 50% of global demand for vaccines. India ranks 3rd worldwide for production by volume and 13th by value. India is the source of 60,000 generic brands across 60 therapeutic categories and manufactures more than 500 different Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients. The country is home to 3,000 pharma companies with a strong network of over 10,500 manufacturing facilities. The domestic pharmaceutical market turnover reached US$ 18.12 billion in 2018, up 9.4% from 2017, growing as penetration of health insurance and pharmacies rise. As per a report prepared by the Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance IPA, at its current rate of 7-8 percent CAGR, the Indian pharmaceutical industry is expected to grow about US$ 80 to 90 billion by 2030. With a double-digit growth of 11-12 percent, the industry can grow about US$ 65 billion by 2024 and about US$ 120 to 130 billion by 2030.

The overall investment in research in India has gone up to 8.5 percent in FY 2018 from 5.3 percent in FY2012. However, India is still at an early stage of discovery. We have to move up the value chain to Made and Discover in India from Made in India. The pharmaceutical industry has continued to show the progress and inspection outcomes are in line with global outcomes. In addition to this, healthcare services like hospitals, health insurance, organized retail are witnessing exponential growth. Emerging technologies such as robotics, virtual reality (VR), automation, Artificial Intelligence, 3D printing, Data Analytics currently being used in the health sector and has the potential to disrupt the health industry and ultimately improve it. The Industry is always on the lookout for employable youth that can take on the challenges of a global market and emerging technologies, and we at SPTM are proud to cater the need of industry by Creating Skilled Healthcare Professionals.
